The Herman Trend Alert January 3, 2007 Virtual Video Interviews Imagine being able to see and hear a candidate, before you invest your valuable time to interview him or her? That is precisely what this system offers: the employer has an opportunity to see a job applicant in a virtual interview from his/her desktop. Companies select the appropriate occupations and interview categories prior to deployment of the virtual video interview (VVI) system. Job seekers then select the appropriate category for their application and answer questions, as if they were in face to face interviews. Once completed the interview is available on an enterprise-wide basis. Because the delivery of every interview is 100 percent digitally identical, the interview is more Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)-compliant than human beings usually provide, thereby reducing legal exposure. How often do HR professionals or hiring managers spend time with applicants when after the first few minutes, they know that these candidates are not “the ones”? However, in order to maintain EEO-compliance they have to give the applicants the full 30 to 45 minutes each. Does the use of such technology sound like something from science fiction? Maybe so. However, already using VVIs is the Los Angeles Unified School District; the Clark County School System is following suit for teacher recruitment; and the entire Michigan Workforce system has just deployed the solution as well. We expect many more employers to jump on Interview USA’s time-saving bandwagon in 2007 Although such interviews may seem somewhat impersonal, some candidates, especially younger people who have been raised in digital and virtual worlds may even find this new system “fun to use”. One large company using the solution went from handling 150 interviews per week to 300 with the same staff; another that has been using the solution for about two years would have had to increase its Human Resources staff by 50 percent to handle the load.
