66 days until January 1, 2000 We're watching a shift toward recognition of people who made a difference in our lives, noting a heightened awareness of those who are special to us. As we struggle with balance in our lives-juggling work, family, personal, spiritual, and community interests-we seek to understand our core beliefs. What's important? What values should we adapt as the foundation of our lives? Moving through this self-evaluation process, we naturally think of who influenced our perspectives, beliefs, and values. First thoughts typically go to parents and other family members, then to teachers, clergy, and care-givers. We acknowledge community leaders who make a difference in our lives-politicians, civic group activists, and those who toil day after day in the trenches of community service locally, nationally, and internationally. Watching the rescue work following recent disasters, we appreciate all the dedicated people making such a powerful difference with their contributions of time, energy, love, and expertise. Greater attention is being given to family, and we see that dedication continuing to grow. Volunteerism is attracting more support in communities--neighborhoods, professions, industries, nations, causes. Working people are reaching a point where they want to balance their work involvement with other aspects of their lives. We've reached a turning point. While making changes to achieve a more comfortable balance in our current and future lives, we honor those who made our lifestyles, accomplishments, and success possible. We're hearing about people thanking teachers and others who influenced them as children. A movement in the United States seeks to recognize and honor the contribution made by the dedicated people who served in World War II. A memorial is planned for Washington, DC-a fund-raising campaign is now underway. Want to get involved yourself? Visit your local Wal-Mart store to see what's happening: this leading retailer has jumped into this national recognition effort. Not only can you purchase special cards to send to veterans for Veterans Day (November 11), they're engaged in a project that will generate the funds to build the memorial.
