The Herman Trend Alert December 30, 1998 Let's Get Spiritual! Have you noticed the movement toward spirituality . . . and organized religion? It's quiet, but it's happening. Let's explore this phenomenon from a generational perspective. The older generation (people born before 1946ùwe call them the parent generation) has demonstrated a solid orientation toward morality, values, and organized religion for decades. That's who they are. These solid citizens don't wear their religion on their sleeve, so to speak, but they are loyal and dedicated congregants. The Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) have been comfortable with religious organizations, but as a generation have not been as deeply involved as their parents. They've had a lot of other things going on in their lives. As these folks grow older, now moving into their fifties, they're becoming more interested in the spiritual side of life. Many are looking for anchors as they age . . . and as their children (who had consumed their life-attention) move out on their own. They're re-assessing their values as they re-focus on their futures. Some have turned to organized religion, returning to the churches and synagogues of their youth. Other Boomers have turned to metaphysics, exploring their link with a higher power through seminars and workshops. The younger generation, most commonly referred to as "Generation X," is fairly strong in its spiritual alignment. While many connect with organized religion, a significant proportion join some of their Boomer brethren in alternative spirituality. Multi-faith, ecumenical, and cross-over belief development will characterize their attitudes, as they explore various belief systems with a great sense of freedom. As religious communities--locally, not just nationally--evolve, watch for more houses of worship to be built. In keeping with popular values of conspicuous consumption, expect these churches to be bigger, more high-tech, and all-encompassing in their multi-media outreach. There will be something for everyone in a broadening and deepening religious environment. © Copyright 1998- by The Herman Group, Inc. -- reproduction for publication is encouraged, with the following attribution: From "The Herman Trend Alert," by Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist. 1.336.210.3548 or https://hermangroup.com.
