The Herman Trend Alert December 7, 2005 Internet Access Will Drive Radical Changes The generation now in school, let us say under the age of 15, will drive radical changes in the future. These young people will grow up racing down what we used to call "the information highway." That term is outmoded now, with the recognition that Internet access makes travel for knowledge and relationships three-dimensional and real-time. Adults, even younger adults, in developed countries have become considerably more computer literate just in the last half-decade. The next generation to mature into adulthood will have knowledge and capabilities far beyond what we see today. Over the next 10 to 20 years, computer power and Internet access will radically change life in countries we currently describe as "third world." Use of the Internet in developed countries is widespread, but underdeveloped countries have been disadvantaged. Those less-wealthy areas are rapidly catching up. Computer technology is spreading rapidly. The development of the Internet and the expansion of access will dramatically change the world we live in. Some of these changes are much closer than we think. For a fascinating glimpse of our current situation, and insight into what is probably going to happen, visit http://glreach.com/globstats/. You will quickly see what is happening. Internet access will shift the balance of power---in the global economy, education and training, healthcare, banking, and the social fabric that weaves together our world's societies. Kids will learn how to use the Internet to explore and follow things of interest to them. They may explore sports, music, clothing, or something else. Their interests are less important than the fact that they must learn to read to use the Internet. That capacity will open a whole new world for thousands of children in the near future…thousands of children who are growing into adults. Most poor areas do not have land-based phone lines, and probably won't. Cell phone technology has made them obsolete. Connecting to the Internet with cell technology is an important investment that will pay off handsomely with greater purchasing power in a short period of time. The power of an eager, educated workforce will drive radical change in developing countries.
