The Herman Trend Alert February 25, 1998 Supply of Technical Workers Not Meeting Demand As technology—and its applications—boom, all sorts of new jobs are being created. This growth provides wonderful jobs, particularly for young people coming out of school with technical knowledge and bubbling eagerness. With the speed of technological development, it’s a real challenge to keep up with the changes. Every time you turn around, something new is being introduced. This intensity puts pressure on technical employees to continually learn new technology, new procedures, and even new ways of thinking. The stimuli don’t stop. Smart employers provide continual learning opportunities to help their workers feel current in their fields. They attract desired new employees by emphasizing the company’s ongoing learning giving people an opportunity to keep abreast with their specialty. We look for community colleges to become significantly more active in offering courses that will meet the learning needs—under company sponsorship as well as for individual employees. Employers will recruit from these schools, plus reach into high schools to attract needed workers. They’ll upgrade non-technical workers who have proven their loyalty and capacity as they struggle to maintain a sufficient talented workforce to serve their clients. © Copyright 1998- by The Herman Group, Inc. -- reproduction for publication is encouraged, with the following attribution: From "The Herman Trend Alert," by Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist. 1.336.210.3548 or https://hermangroup.com.
