The Herman Trend Alert March 11, 1998: Employers Hiring Distance Workers Many of the talented people companies want to hire are interested in the job opportunities, but not necessarily the moves to the employer's location. As a result, we're seeing more people working from their homes in distant cities-without moving to accept the new jobs. This trend suggests that relocation services will have a somewhat diminishing importance, particularly for sales and some technical/administrative positions. If the new employees can work from their own homes, hundreds or thousands of miles from the employer's location, they will more often opt to do so. The growing technologies supporting telecommuting, hoteling, and virtual officing support workers being able to leave their kids in the same school and live in the home and locale they prefer. Many communities will house significant populations of people who work, but not for local employers. We'll see an increasing demand for more telephone lines for distance workers, as well as more opportunities for remodeling contractors. Managers will learn new ways of working with subordinates they never see and co-workers will build e-mail and telephone relationships with each other.
