Bring Back Simplicity

292 days until January 1, 2001

Henry David Thoreau, during his days at Walden Pond, emphasized simplicity as being central to an enjoyable life. He saw the world around him becoming unbearably complex and sought to avoid becoming overwhelmed by complexity.

Over the years, our lives have become increasingly complex . . . and complicated. And, to make matters worse, everything around us seems to function at higher speeds. Demands upon us continue to intensify, making it more difficult to keep up . . . let alone make progress!

We're hearing more and more people proclaim their dissatisfaction with today's lifestyle. "Stop the merry-go-round! I want to get off!" Moving away from the high-speed, high-demand, overly complex world is not easy to do. The pace is like a trap; once you're sucked into it, escape seems next to impossible. Nevertheless, there's a trend to change personal lifestyles, regardless of the cost.

Those who have already adopted a slower lifestyle report that their mental and physical health is significantly better. They're happier outside the rat-race and are quite satisfied with lower achievement and simplicity. Our forecast is that this break-away trend will gain more followers, confounding those who choose not to give up their harried existence.

How will this shift be manifested? More people will move out of the urbanized areas into exurban and rural environments where people are people and folks actually have extended conversations outside the drugstore or on a park bench in front of the courthouse. Workers will choose to work in companies where customer and supplier relationships are built over time, where people are expected to leave work around 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening . . . without taking work home. Family life will move to center stage and clothing-even at work-will become less formal.

We're already seeing workers value time over money. When they're asked whether they want more money in their paycheck or more time off, more and more people choose the time. We're moving toward a simpler lifestyle. John Galt (in Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged") and Thoreau are finally influencing the way we live.
