Three Silent Dangers Affecting Humanity's Future

Some years ago, at a salon given by the Boardroom folks in New York City, I met Dr. Richard Horowitz, a board-certified MD and one of the top clinicians worldwide in the treatment of tick-borne diseases. At that time, I wrote about a Herman Trend Alert about "Lyme Disease and Other Viruses Revisited." Recently, Richard penned a new book, Starseed R/evolution, the Awakening (Permuted Press, March 2022), a humorous science fiction/climate change novel which provides innovative scientific planetary solutions and hope for those with climate grief.

A Very Timely Book
A recent report from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) shows that we have a very small window to reverse our present climate emergency. Half of the animal species assessed by the report have already migrated, looking for temperatures and other climatic conditions in which they can survive; some species are moving toward the poles, deeper waters, and higher elevations. Other species have reached their adaptation limits and risk extinction. Protecting natural habitats can help limit flooding, wildfires, and the spread of disease. Extreme heat has become the top weather-related cause of death in the United States, and with further rising temperatures, it is expected to be get worse. This report details how climate change threatens mental health and wellbeing as well.

A Global Phenomenon
The recent Glasgow COP26 climate summit highlighted some of the serious environmental dangers facing humanity due to rising global greenhouse gases and rising temperatures. These threats included loss of biodiversity among fish, mammals, and insects, decreasing pollinators, rising sea levels with storm surges and flooding, as well as droughts, wildfires, tornadoes, and heat related illness, not to mention population displacement due to climate migration.

Three Additional Issues Looming
Three other significant health-related issues remain unaddressed by COP26. These risks require immediate attention: 1) the continued rise of Lyme disease and associated tick-borne disorders, 2) increasing environmental toxicity and 3) worsening global nutritional deficiencies. According to Horowitz, these three health dangers must be included in a comprehensive global plan to help us adapt to changing environmental conditions.

The Insidious Effects of Temperature Rise
We know that the rise in global temperatures has been responsible for an increased risk of mosquito-borne infections, like malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, and West Nile, and of course, tick-borne infections like Lyme disease as well. Insects have no way to regulate their internal body temperatures and rely on environmental temperatures to reproduce. The higher the ambient temperature, the higher the insectsÕ reproductive rates. In 2020 in the US alone, almost a half a million people had Lyme disease, while worldwide, a quarter million individuals contracted chikungunya, an estimated 100 to 400 million were infected with dengue fever, along with 241 million cases of malaria. These rising infections can cause severe illness and death; moreover, the infections often have overlapping symptoms including fever, fatigue, nausea, rashes, severe joint and muscle pain with joint swelling, headache, and even neurological complications.

Melting of the Polar Icecaps is Just the Beginning
Besides the enormous problem of rising sea levels---already causing climate migration---the melting Artic permafrost will also expose us to new bacterial and viral infections, frozen in ice for hundreds of thousands of years, potentially triggering new pandemics. Humanity has no natural immunity against these pathogens. Also, as the Thwaites glacier ice shelf in West Antarctica is poised to collapse in the next 3 to 5 years, rapidly rising sea levels of several feet will cause extensive global flooding and increased exposure to mold toxins.

Climate and COVID
Although climate change was not directly implicated in the spread of COVID-19, some of the causes of climate change increase pandemic risks. These bases include deforestation and loss of habitat leading to animal migration and human/animal interactions. At the same time, wildfire smoke and increasing air and environmental pollution can increase mortality from COVID-19 and morbidity from other illnesses. Wildfire smoke contains small particles less than 2.5 parts per million (ppm) which have been linked to increased risk from dementia, chronic heart and lung disease, stroke, and cancer, as well as psychological trauma with PTSD.

Dangerous Devices
Some of the objects vaporized in the West Coast's deadly wildfires were computers, cellphones, refrigerators, and cars with plastics, leading to high levels of toxic exposure. On top of toxic mold, we are subject to daily exposure to hundreds of environmental chemicals, including heavy metals, pesticides, PCBs, and dioxins. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to increased risks of the 6 A's: ADD, ADHD, Allergies, Autism, Alzheimer's, and Autoimmune disease. Our bodies are not normally equipped to handle such high levels of toxins and require increased nutritional support for detoxification of these chemicals. Simultaneously, as the global food supply is affected by flooding, droughts, and insect infestation, the quality of our nutrition will decrease, leading to cycles of worsening health conditions.

A Call to Action
As the world grapples with climate change and global warming, we must create a comprehensive plan and address these three silent health dangers. Time has run out, yet immediate implementation of solutions can protect humanity: geoengineering the Arctic to prevent glacial collapse, protection of species and dwindling biodiversity, regenerative agriculture, and electrifying everything with wind, water, and solar. The survival of humankind depends on it, and in his book, Horowitz provides needed hope.
