The Herman Trend Alert March 20, 2002 Personal Service on the Rise As people assume greater responsibility for their own lives, their own destinies, we will see growth in the personal services industry. New opportunities will open for personal trainers, coaches, nutritionists, career counselors, concierges, and more. We are already seeing growth in these areas, but substantial expansion is not far in the future. The recession of the early 1990s sent a very clear message to young people and their parents. The young people watched as their parents were laid off from career employment at no fault of their own. Suddenly, dedicated and loyal employees had their worlds turned upsidedown. With the shocking realization that employers were no longer going to care for employees from cradle-to-grave, workers proclaimed that they would now assume that responsibility for themselves. No longer would employers have control over their lives. The young people were the first to commit to self-management, including changing jobs whenever it made sense to further their careers. It wasn't long before workers in their 40s and 50s acquired the same attitude. Now we have another recessionary period. This one is affecting the younger people as employers seek workers with knowledge, expertise, and experience. A large segment of our population is now comfortable with the I-control-my-life mindset. People from all walks of life are accepting responsibilities for their bodies-physical trainers. They are concerned about getting their lives in order- personal coaches. These relationships with support professionals are one-on-one; close, personal relationships, rather than the involvement with groups we saw not long ago. As more people concentrate on their own personal growth and development-on all dimensions: physical, career, psychological, spiritual-the demand for qualified personal services professionals will grow. Of course, we'll also see a concurrent growth in the organizations that prepare people for this work: community colleges with healthcare programs, Coach University, seminaries with special programs on spiritual counseling. Where will the people come from to do this work? Many will be drop-outs from the corporate world, people seeking more fulfilling careers. Of course, this shift will place more of an employment burden on corporations, as career dynamics continue their turbulence. © Copyright 1998- by The Herman Group, Inc. -- reproduction for publication is encouraged, with the following attribution: From "The Herman Trend Alert," by Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist. 1.336.210.3548 or https://hermangroup.com.
