The Herman Trend Alert March 25, 1998: Employers Resort to Non-traditional Means to Recruit Scarce Workers You know things are tough for employers when they resort to unusual means for finding people. Last night, we stopped by our local supermarket to pick up a few things. This supermarket has a system that uses the back of register tapes for advertising. Imagine our surprise when we looked at the back of our register tape and discovered an employment ad for American Express. Employers are resorting to all kinds of non-traditional means to attract recruits. For a while now, billboards and road signs have touted local employment opportunities. We have even seen challenged employers handing out flyers on the streets of crowded cities. The most unusual sign appeared on the bathroom wall of a hotel in New York. (We suspect the hotel did not know of its presence or it would have been removed.) As the unemployment rate continues to drop, the situation will become even more critical. In concentrating on recruiting efforts, many employers are losing sight of the bigger picture. If they would only invest in their current staffs, they would be able to save much of the high recruiting costs, or better yet, grow. In fact, they would enjoy a number of additional benefits as well—increased customer satisfaction, higher morale, higher productivity, and less stress.
