The Herman Trend Alert April 1, 1998: Employee Turnover Reaching Unprecedented Levels The increasing demand for qualified employees, combined with worker dissatisfaction with management practices, has created opportunities for people to move more easily between jobs. It’s safe to leave, now that there are a number of places to go. As we first predicted ‘way back in 1990, people are switching jobs at an unprecedented rate. This trend will continue. Some people are changing jobs simply to escape. Either they’ve been in the same job so long that they’re bored, they want to shift to a different career, or they’re fed up with the way they’re treated by management. The increased frequency of job changes will be unsettling and will de-stabilize many organizations. Employee turnover will increasingly become a bottom-line issue. To maintain workforce stability and continuity, management will have to take deliberate, assertive action to encourage people to stay. Workforce stability has now become a strategic issue. Turnover, combined with economic expansion, will make it difficult to grow. Finding new workers will be hard enough; now employers will have to worry about finding replacement workers. © Copyright 1998- by The Herman Group, Inc. -- reproduction for publication is encouraged, with the following attribution: From "The Herman Trend Alert," by Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist. 1.336.210.3548 or https://hermangroup.com.
