The Herman Trend Alert April 15, 1998: Young People Taking Control of Careers The twenty-somethings are beginning to manage their careers differently than their parents or their older siblings did. They want to avoid the trap of placing all their eggs in one basket. They see little value in staying with one company for their entire career. They’re adventuresome—they want to do different kinds of work in different places. Not ruts for these folks! Instead of staying around long enough to get the gold watch, today’s young people will move from job to job much more frequently. We anticipate the trend will be for people to change jobs every 2-4 years. Forget the golden handcuffs! These workers, highly adaptable to different opportunities, will seek to "ramp up" very quickly with each new employer. They’ll learn rapidly and will expect to get right to work with high levels of responsibility. Their objective will be to make their mark early, then evaluate opportunities to move to greater opportunities to make a difference, to be involved. Employers can hold these mobile workers, if they offer variety, stimulation, high learning, and a chance to actually accomplish something . . . to make a positive difference in the world around them. © Copyright 1998- by The Herman Group, Inc. -- reproduction for publication is encouraged, with the following attribution: From "The Herman Trend Alert," by Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist. 1.336.210.3548 or https://hermangroup.com.
