The Herman Trend Alert April 18, 2000 Travel Becomes More Luxurious 257 days until January 1, 2001 If you lived in a mansion, as many wealthy folks do, until recently you would have dreaded traveling. After all, you'd be leaving your sumptuous, expansive home--to go "slumming" at the finest hotels. Even Presidential suites didn't approach the luxury you enjoyed at home. Not so anymore. Responding to a growing demand for super luxurious sleeping space, selected hotels around the country are providing the opulence sought by this rarified population segment. Consider these three examples: First is The New York Palace Hotel in New York City. The five diamond Towers offers the "ultimate" in luxurious accommodations, impeccable guest service and thoughtfully indulgent amenities. Owned by the royal family of Brunei, the rooms, suites, and triplexes, which afford striking views of Manhattan, run from $565 to $10,000 per night. Of course, for that price, you also have your own multi-lingual Maitre d'Etage to pamper you with 24-hour butler service and cater to your every whim. This acclaimed property offers in-room dining with menus from world-renowned restaurants Le Cirque 2000 and Sushisay. (www.newyorkpalace.com) On the West Coast in San Diego, the top-drawer La Valencia Hotel is building its own "hotel within a hotel," scheduled for completion in May. Featuring spectacular views of the Pacific, in the heart of downtown La Jolla, its sumptuous suites also offer butler service and other service amenities expected at this level. Appealing to sophisticated travelers, the hotel offers curb-side check-in, fireplaces, whirlpool baths (multi-person), steam showers, and selections of down pillows and comforters, not to mention the finest food in town. Deluxe ocean villas cost a mere $550 to $3000 per night. (www.lavalenciahotel.com) See the world in the lap of luxury on Silversea Cruises, named the "World's Best Cruise Line" by "Condé Nast Traveler." Spacious quarters offer up to 1,314 square feet. These luxuriously appointed suites feature two bedrooms and offer ocean views with teak verandas, including marbled baths, walk-in closets, and lots more. Naturally, these premium quarters cost $680 to $1,910 per day per person-inclusive of ALL extras.
