The Herman Trend Alert
May 13, 2015 Cleaner Food Catching On Though the trend towards reducing unhealthy ingredients in food has been around for a while, it appears to be gaining momentum. Following in the footsteps of Nestle and Dunkin' Donuts, The United States restaurant chain Chipotle just announced it is abandoning GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Panera recently proclaimed it is dropping dozens of food additives and other artificial ingredients from its food by 2016. Even the fast-food chains are making the transition to "cleaner food".
Fast-Food Jumps on the Bandwagon Who ever expected McDonalds to offer selections with "no artificial flavors, no added colors, and no preservatives"? However, the home of the golden arches has just announced "Artisan Grilled Chicken, seared to perfection for maximum juiciness and flavor". On its regular menu, McDonalds offers six salads, apple slices, and eight wraps. With 43,878 restaurants in 110 countries, Subway sandwich shops announced in late April 2014 that they would no longer serve bread with the ingredient Azodicarbonamide, a preservative used in most bread and by most brands.
Packaged Goods Takes Up the Cause, Too Packaged goods companies have also supported the trend to cleaner food. Honey Maid Graham Crackers is no longer made with high fructose corn syrup---a fact that is promoted in their television commercials and print advertisements. Last month, the iconic company Kraft Foods even announced that starting in January 2016, in the US their Original Macaroni & Cheese would no longer be made with artificial preservatives or synthetic colors.
What We May Expect We have only seen the beginning of this trend towards "cleaner food". With 70 percent of the food supply compromised by GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), we have only begun to experience this food's effect on the health of citizens. Expect to see this trend gaining momentum, as education raises people's consciousness about the negative consequences of preservatives, artificial ingredients, and other food additives. People who can afford to eat clean, organic, local foods will do so in increasing numbers. Those who cannot afford to buy clean food will increasingly suffer the negative effects, widening the gap between the Haves and the Have-Nots. Right now, we see this trend mostly in the US, where the use of GMOs, growth hormones, and antibiotics are still allowed; as we move into the future, other countries around the globe will also become aware of this growing threat and we will see similar actions on the part of food purveyors and their consumers. Special thanks to Health Ranger Mike Adams of Natural News for raising our consciousness to this important topic.
