The Herman Trend Alert May 30, 2000 Keeping People is a Global Theme 215 Days Until January 1, 2001 Attracting and holding top talent is a serious concern for employers all over the globe. We are most concerned about workforce stability in the United States because of our 3.9 percent unemployment rate. It is easy to be lulled into complacency, thinking that this issue is not critical for employers in countries with substantially higher unemployment. Our research has uncovered increasing interest in employee retention in developed countries all over the world. Roger's book, "Keeping Good People," has been published in German, Spanish, and Portuguese and sells well in English internationally. Our observance of growing concern was validated this past week at the convention of the American Society for Training and Development in Dallas, Texas. The 11,832 registrants included 2,306 representing 84 countries outside the United States. The highest international attendance came from Canada, Korea, Japan, Brazil, and The Netherlands. We talked with people from China, Israel, Mexico, Indonesia, New Zealand, South Africa, Egypt, and a number of other countries. A universal topic was how employers could hold on to valued employees. Training professionals representing these diverse employers were hungry for whatever they could learn about employee retention. The information technology industry is like a giant vacuum, sucking up practically anyone who is qualified to do the vital work in this field. There are shortages everywhere, as we hear continually in the United States. Now we're hearing exactly the same thing from employers - and journalists - in other countries. We were just interviewed by a journalist from Curitiba, Brazil, where we will speak next month. The questions were the same ones we are asked by journalists in the United States. Our commonality of interests is even greater than we have seen in the recent past. We anticipate that the concern for employee retention will grow even larger as multinational employers search for talent in every country where they do business, including the US. Some employers are buying businesses just to acquire the workers. © Copyright 1998- by The Herman Group, Inc. -- reproduction for publication is encouraged, with the following attribution: From "The Herman Trend Alert," by Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist. 1.336.210.3548 or https://hermangroup.com.
