The Herman Trend Alert May 6, 1998: Balancing Work and Family Becoming a Serious Issue With the recent release of the study from the Work and Families Institute, the publication of the new book, "The War Against Parents", and the increasing number of articles in the print media, we are seeing a trend towards greater attention being paid to helping people balance work and family life. Employees and employers alike will be looking for information about this important subject. Employees will need to know how to approach their seemingly uncaring supervisors. . . what they can do to get the time off they require to "be there" for their children. What languaging will work to help their supervisors—who never received "a break" from their superiors—see the parents’ perspective, and the importance of attendance at the school and sporting events? On the other hand, employers will need to how to approach this delicate area so that employees do not take advantage of their generosity. Employers will be looking for advice about policies and procedures that will work for them—without giving away the store. They will also have to be sensitive to the feelings of the other employees, who do not have school-age children whose perceptions may be that they are being disadvantaged. Employers will look for the "right" formulas to help temper their generosity with attention to the bottom line. © Copyright 1998- by The Herman Group, Inc. -- reproduction for publication is encouraged, with the following attribution: From "The Herman Trend Alert," by Joyce Gioia, Strategic Business Futurist. 1.336.210.3548 or https://hermangroup.com.
