Multiple Part-Time Jobs, By Choice

An increasing proportion of our workforce wants more flexibility—in the kind of work, time of work, and place of employment. Restless workers are gradually becoming less interested in the traditional 40-hour jobs doing one kind of work all day. They seek variety and multiple opportunities for personal and professional growth. At the same time, they want more freedom in how they manage their time.

The solution? Part-time jobs. Several of them. At the same time.

A number of people are working several part-time jobs now to bring in the money to pay the bills. For many of them, this is not the career design of choice. They’re forced into this kind of a multiple job position by employers who want part-time workers. The benefit to the employer is a flexible workforce that typically is not given fringe benefits as part of the compensation package. At this point, the advantage is perceived as being on the employer’s side.

We forecast that a significant proportion of our workforce will choose the multiple-job life style. A lack of work at one employer can be made up by more work for one or more other employers. Multi-job workers can set their own schedules, perhaps to address child care issues, a desire to accommodate a spouse’s work schedule, or the availability of transportation.

Some workers will simply want the variety of doing different things at different places. If the multi-job worker serves several small business, he could be a prime player in each environment. This design will be seen among skilled workers such as bookkeepers, human resource professionals, preventive maintenance technicians, and others who essentially ride a circuit from one part-time employer to another.

Expect to see more creative approaches to employment relationships as more people take control of their own career destiny.
