The Herman Trend Alert June 27, 2000 Staying at Home 187 Days until January 1, 2001 We used to hear: "Home is where the heart is." Home is now where the heart, stomach, mind, and hands are. And this trend will continue at an increasing rate. In the past, home was a refuge, an escape from the challenges of work, intensity of school, and complex relationships with friends and neighbors. Some homes are built as fortresses -- with walls, fences, and topographic barriers to protect inhabitants from the outside world. We used to have to leave the home to earn a living, learn, shop, or enjoy entertainment. Now, we can do all this activity from home; we no longer have to leave. Imagine what life will be when leaving the home becomes unusual, instead of the "normal" way things are done. Earning a living from home has never been easier. Telecommuting has increased dramatically -by corporations and in popularity with workers. More and more people will work from home, on flexible schedules, to respond to the 24/7 expectations of employers, coworkers, and customers around the globe. Home-based business is increasing, as people seek independence and influence over their own success. Learning from home is easy -- by phone, CD ROM, an internet - live or pre-recorded - for personal growth or college credit. Shopping from home is becoming much more efficient. Catalogs come alive on-line, even enabling us to see how we look the new outfit with our body measurements. Grocery shopping is easy; float gracefully down the aisles in cyberspace in a fraction of the time we'd spend in the store. Companies like Peapod.com and the e-Ventures logistical services recently formed by United Parcel Service assure we receive merchandise promptly. Home entertainment is flourishing. Entertainment resources are available through the internet, videotapes and DVD. Huge wall screens, combined with multi-media entertainment centers, offer a fine experience anytime you want it. No more concern about when shows are scheduled, our entertainment can be on-demand. We will control our lives - at home - on our terms. Consider implications for movie theatres, schools, shopping malls, and other human-dependent environments. Life will be different.
