The Herman Trend Alert July 25, 2000 Singles Hunting for Mates 157 Days until January 1, 2001 You're in your twenties, single, working hard. Your job is your life-there's so much to learn and do. You're driven to soak up as much as possible, fast. Wait a minute! What about the personal life? Dating. Enjoyment with friends. Finding a mate. Those biological-and psychological-clocks are ticking. But, who has time to search for compatible partners? Blind dates are a risk, and unorganized dating is time-consuming. Enter: Power Dating. Find a new job at a career fair? Why not a dating fair? A new trend is gaining popularity around the United States and other countries. Singles participate in experiences that give them opportunities to meet a variety of eligible dating/mating partners in a short period of time. If something "clicks," you make arrangements to spend more time with the other person-assuming the feeling is mutual. Table for Six is a dating service for busy professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area. Described as a social club for upscale singles 25-65, the service invites three men and three women to dinner at a moderately priced romantic restaurant. People are matched with those of similar interests. Members participate in a number of dinners, perhaps several with the same potential partner in a risk-free environment. A host provides introductions and a bottle of wine and the get-acquainted conversations begin. www.tableforsix.com. Other activities are available, too. And now there's speed-dating. www.speeddating.com. This service is gaining momentum in the Jewish community, as young Jewish singles seek mates with similar backgrounds. For those fed up with the bar and party routine, there's an alternative. Women and men sit across the table from each other and converse for eight minutes. Then a bell rings, and it's time to switch partners. In these brief conversations, participants decide if they want to spend more time with the person they've met. Managers of the process arrange for the information exchange, giving the woman's number to the man for follow-up. Programs are running in at least eight US cities and in several other countries.
