Student Centric Learning
What happens when a university concentrates on the students with the express purpose of creating employable citizens who contribute to society even before they graduate? The answer is that that university goes from 17th to 1st in its category in fewer than 10 years, becoming the best of the "Regional Colleges South" entrants in the US News & World Report poll in the United States and becoming beloved by students and parents alike.
Teaching students to thrive in the real world
In 2005, serial entrepreneur Nido Qubein took over leadership of a small southern college in High Point, North Carolina and everything changed. He began by immediately focusing on the students, answering the question, "How do we make our university the best place for students, not only by concentrating on giving them the skills and abilities to be successful but also by supporting them to grow and thrive in the real world?"
Holistic experiential education
High Point University delivers holistic education for experiential learners that includes internships, study abroad, undergraduate research, and service learning. Each student is assigned a Success Coach, housed in their "Center for Student Success", the embodiment of their credo "Connect, Collaborate, Create", providing a place for students to answer these questions:
How do I connect what I know?
How do I connect my experiential learnings with relevance to the workplace?
Teaching life skills and etiquette
Qubein seeks to instill the entrepreneurial spirit in each of the students, building job creators not job takers. Moreover, the University connects with the students as Freshmen in a Life Skills Class taught by Nido Qubein himself. There is even a free fine dining restaurant on campus, called "1924 Prime" where students are exposed to proper dining etiquette as well as a changing monthly menu of ethnic food from around the world.
The building continues
High Point is in the process of building a Health Sciences and Pharmacy Program, housed in a USD $120 Million Facility, including a Physician's Assistant course of study. Can a full-fledged medical school be far behind?
A respected role model for others
High Point provides a challenging role model for other universities around the world to emulate---on- and off-line. With this kind of success, it won't be long before many others follow suit being student centric and providing students with positive, effective experiences.
