Super-Agers Part 1
According to Harvard University, Super-Agers are people in their 70s and 80s who have the mental or physical capability of people tens of years younger. Northwestern University's Neuroscientist Emily Rogalski, PhD, who leads their study on super-aging, has a slightly different idea: to her, Super-Agers are in their 80s or older and exhibit cognitive function comparable to that of an average middle-aged person. Whichever definition you choose, it just makes sense to look at how those special seniors stay so mentally and physically fit.
What Super-Agers Do
Here are some habits of the Super-Agers that are believed to contribute to their being able to function at a higher level than most people their ages.
Remain very physically and mentally active. Super-Agers exercise regularly, often with friends. They know that working out regularly keeps them fit and helps to control weight. By the same token, challenging their brains on a regular basis is something that super-agers do; whether through crossword puzzles or the JumbleĻ or even phone-based word or card games, they get the value of stimulating their minds to work---and play.
Pay attention to nutrition. They watch what they eat; many have already adopted a plant-based diet. They eat diets high in fresh fruits and vegetables and minimize processed foods.
Water is elemental. Staying hydrated is critical to good health, especially when the temperature goes up or you are in a low-humidity enclosed space, like an office. Be sure to drink plenty of filtered water.
Sleep is important. Super-Agers realize that adequate sleep (between 7 and 8 hours/night) is vital to recharging the body.
Social networks are meaningful. Having good friends appears to be another significant factor in maintaining the super-ager lifestyle.
Keep giving back. These unique folks want to keep making a difference: in their communities, in their families, and in the world.
What Super-Agers Don't Do
Just as important as what these super seniors do is what they don't do. The do not . . .
Stress out about things. They take adversity in their stride. If there is a problem, they will not obsess about it. You will often hear them saying, "This, too, shall pass."
Eat a lot of fried and/or processed food. These tuned-in older folks know just how detrimental these two categories of food can be not only to their weight, but more importantly, their health.
Ignore warning signs. Pain is the body's way of telling us that something is wrong. While these super-agers may overlook minor aches and pains, they know that chronic pain means that there is something in the body that needs attention. They see their healthcare professionals as often as necessary.
Surround themselves with negative people. These Super-Agers know that an important part of keeping their immune systems strong is to have positive people in their lives and to keep thinking optimistic thoughts.
Super-Agers clearly have a handle on what it takes to keep their bodies healthy and their brains active. See you next week for Part 2.
