Computer Coding Skills in High Demand Worldwide
It's happening in China, in India, and in the United States: there is a marked increase in the number of jobs that require some coding skills. At least for the foreseeable future, knowing coding is your ticket to being employed. In the words of Mike Grassotti, the chief technology officer at small business loans company LiftForward, "Coding is the new literacy: Like the ability to read, what was once optional will soon be a basic requirement."
Half of the high-paying jobs in the US now require this skill
According to the job market analytics firm Burning Glass, roughly half of the jobs in the top income quartile (defined as jobs paying $57,000USD or more per year) are in occupations that usually demand applicants have at least some computer coding knowledge or skill. (The company analyzed 26 million US online job postings.)
Growth of information technology (IT) jobs in India
While these numbers include much more than just coding positions, the numbers of IT and ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services) have grown 33 percent and 49 percent, respectively, year-over-year.
For years Coding Bootcamps have been trending
One such boot camp is Oracle Academy, the philanthropic arm of Oracle focused on computer science education. There coders learn to write in the most popular programming languages, SQL, Java, JavaScript, C# and Python. There are also numerous other programs, notably CodingDojo, CodeAcademy (also free), Girl Develop It and Udacity.
China has a glut of programmers
Because too many people were encouraged into the field, China actually has an oversupply of coders. This over-abundance has led to an "up or out scenario". What this trend means is that either you get promoted up---meaning either you have learned more skills which make you worth paying more to keep or they get rid of you and hire another entry-level person with basic skills. That scenario used to be alive and well in the help desk industry in the US as well.
What's coming
In the near-term (5-8 years), the demand for coding skills is not going away and having some skills will always be an asset. Coding skills make people more versatile and creative. In the longer-term, many of the coding jobs will be going away, as computers and other machines will increasingly be able to program themselves.
