Move the Body, Improve the Mind
We have personally long experienced the links between exercise, brainpower and feelings of wellbeing. A recent study at Leeds Metropolitan University followed a group of employees and reported improved mood and performance, leading to better concentration, work-based relationships, and resilience to stress. Overall, they were more productive and felt better able to handle their workloads. It's no wonder that
In its newly released white paper called "Minds at Work: Increasing Brain Power through Exercise", Virgin Pulse cites several research studies that demonstrate the value of aerobic activity and wellbeing. Virgin's founder Sir Richard Branson himself cites "Working out" as his top productivity tip.
Exercise reverses brain decay and amplifies brain cells
In the 1990s, scientists discovered that the human brain is capable of renewing itself (neurogenesis) and that exercise speeds up the process. Another scientist put it this way," Physical activity bathes neural tissue in oxygen-rich blood, increasing the production of chemicals that improve memory, attention, and problem solving.
Focus on wellbeing as a productivity-booster
Part of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group, Virgin Pulse, supports employees' wellbeing with tools that help them cultivate daily good habits and sustainable behavior change. Worldwide, more than 2 million employees use this award-winning, online platform, to get and stay healthy and fit.
Many large employers have already embraced the value of wellness; others will follow
Expect to see more universal adoption of the value of encouraging employees to exercise and stay healthy across all sizes of employers. So in the future, we will see even smaller employers adding value for employees by offering at least gym memberships as a benefit. There are probably already companies, besides Virgin Pulse, that are aggregating smaller employee populations to enjoy economies of scale. This new information may also be an opportunity for health clubs to offer additional services? In addition, employers will have no choice but to provide the right incentives to reinforce the desired positive behaviors.
Once corporate leaders begin to see the direct effect encouraging these programs can have on their bottom lines, expect to see a lot more interest generated. Money talks!
